How We Teach PE at Birchwood Junior School

At Birchwood Junior School, we believe Physical Education should be more than just games and exercise – it should be the foundation for a lifelong love of movement. That’s why we use the Beyond the Physical PE Scheme of Work, a flexible, innovative, and engaging approach that is designed to transform young people’s lives through sport and physical activity.

A Mastery-Based Approach

Our PE curriculum focuses on mastery of fundamental skills. By revisiting and developing key movements and techniques in greater depth, pupils gain the confidence and competence they need to be successful in any physical activity – whether that’s in school, in competitive sport, or simply being active for life.

Evidence-Based and Research-Informed

The programme we use is grounded in the latest educational research, ensuring it has a real impact on children’s learning and wellbeing. Every lesson is designed to maximise participation, progress, and enjoyment.

Building Physical Literacy

We teach with the principles of physical literacy at the heart of our practice. This means not only building skills and fitness, but also encouraging pupils to understand, value, and enjoy movement. By doing this, we aim to instil the confidence, motivation, and knowledge needed for children to remain active throughout their lives.

Inspiring a Love of Movement

Our ultimate goal is simple: to help every child discover the joy of being active. By creating positive experiences in PE, we give our pupils the opportunity to develop healthy habits, teamwork, resilience, and a love of physical activity that will stay with them long after they leave Birchwood.
