Reading in school:
Every child has the opportunity to read every day.
Establishing high standards of pupil achievement in reading is a priority at Birchwood Junior School. The National Curriculum provides the main direction for the English reading, writing and spelling provision offered. Within lessons, pupils receive direct teaching of reading, writing, spelling, and speaking and listening. Children are exposed to fluent reading, modelled by adults and more confident readers and facilitated with opportunities to adapt and develop their own story teller voice using the 6 Ps of fluency. Children learn about a range of different text types, and about the key features of each style of writing.
Reading at home:
The school uses the Rising Stars Reading Planet scheme. The books available in the school library are grouped into coloured book bands according to the decodability and sentence structure of the text. This means that when a child knows his/her book band, they are able to select books from the wide variety of additional reading materials we have in school.
