English Writing

Our Vision for Writing

At Birchwood Junior School we vow that every child will be a writer by the time they leave us in year 6, regardless of background or starting point.

For us, a writer is someone with an authentic purpose to communicate, who is inspired by the writing of others and who believes in what they are writing about. Writers research their ideas and carefully consider their audience. They take great joy in exploring their ideas through talk and have the creative freedom to play around with vocabulary & sentence composition until the text reflects not only what is required of the genre, but their own personal style too.

A writer carefully plans, drafts and edits their work, recognising that writing is a craft that requires time, patience and the support of a community of writers.

For a writer, handwriting has become so fluent, they are able to focus on the experience or message they want to transfer to the reader, and so have learnt to control grammatical composition, effective punctuation choice and accurate spelling.

A writer can effectively communicate their own thoughts and ideas via the written word, which in turn helps them to discover themselves and the world around them. They recognise that once you have learnt to write, you can then write to learn. With this skill set you can explore the possibilities of an entire curriculum and far, far beyond.

Delivering our Vision

At Birchwood we are passionate about building a curriculum that reflects the journey of an author. Every students voice is vitally important, so we have worked with local expertise to craft a curriculum that is progressive, inclusive and authentic in purpose.
