History at Birchwood Junior School
History is the story of humanity. It invites our pupils to ask big questions such as “Who am I?” and “Why do we do things this way?” By exploring the lives of individuals and civilisations from the past, children can reflect on the modern world around them and consider the possibilities for the future.
At Birchwood Junior School, our history curriculum helps pupils to develop as both citizens of the UK and citizens of the wider world. Through studying Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and the Islamic Empire, our children learn how global cultures and ideas have shaped the world we live in today. Alongside this, they gain a strong sense of national identity by exploring British history – from the Stone Age, through the medieval and early modern periods, to the home front of the Second World War.
