Every Child a reader (

Every child a reader now, and for the rest of their lives

In every subject, reading is recognised as the cornerstone to developing skills, knowledge and aspirations. We believe that for children to be truly engaged as readers, and in turn become life-long readers, they must have the background knowledge to empathise and connect to the story; to be immersed in a rich and diverse range of genres and to learn the vocabulary which research dictates will give our children the future success they deserve.

Reading is championed by every staff member in our school, and every book selected with our children is purposeful and well-pitched to their needs. Staff receive regular training and use research based approaches to teach. Through accurate assessment and assigning a band of books all pupils are given appropriate challenge. The primary goal is to develop phonetically sound fluent readers by the end of year 4. In years 5 and 6 pupils, with their reading fluency skills, can then diversify their reading allowing them to comprehend information that is age appropriate in lessons, form opinions and develop a love for reading. This will provide pupils with a vehicle to access knowledge from a variety of sources, write for purpose and become a lifelong learner. Leaving Birchwood as a capable reader will give pupils an effective tool to prepare for adulthood.
