School Council

Every class at Birchwood elects two representatives to the School Council. Children from Year 3 to Year 6 stand for election and are chosen by their classmates, so every year group has a voice in how the school is run.

The Council meets through the year. Representatives bring the views of their class to each meeting, put pupils' ideas to senior leaders and to governors, lead projects that improve school life, and report back to their class afterwards.

They have a real record of change. The Council made the case to the governing body for solar power, and the school now has 78 solar panels and two battery units, reducing both our energy costs and our carbon footprint. They have held a question and answer session with Hamish Falconer, the Member of Parliament for Lincoln. They have strengthened the online safety support available in school, and they have worked to make sure that every child is able to take part in clubs, trips and discos.

This is where our pupils learn what democracy actually feels like — standing for something, being trusted with a decision, and being answerable to the people who elected you.
