Miss C Good- Primary Languages Leader
‘A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world’ (National Curriculum, 2013). At Birchwood Junior School, we are committed to ensuring that competence in another language enables children to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures.
How Do We Teach French?
The teaching of French provides a successful balance of spoken and written language that lays the foundations for further foreign language acquisition in Key Stage 3. Looking to the future, learning another language also equips pupils to visit or work in countries where English is not the primary language, as well as form connections and forge relationships with those from other countries and cultures. The weekly French lessons at our school are delivered within our rotation sessions by highly skilled staff.
- Vocabulary
- Pronunciation, phonics, spellings
- Sentence building
- Knowledge about language
Some lessons will include all of these four areas while others may focus on individual elements. Through participation and engagement, our pupils develop a sound basis of knowledge and understanding of the French language and through increasing competence and confidence, their love of languages blossoms.
