Reading
Our Vision for Reading
At Birchwood Junior School, we vow that every child must be a reader by the time they leave us in year 6, no matter their starting point or background. We value this ideal to such an extent, that it is in fact one of our golden threads. You can find out why we value reading so much on our curriculum vision page.
So what is a reader?
For us, a reader is someone who can decode & read with fluency. They gain the experiences they need to comprehend text so that they can freely, confidently and passionately talk about books as well as write about them.
A reader, with this toolkit, is someone who is then empowered to take great joy in living a life of discovery through books. Discovery of themselves, the world around them, and the infinite worlds that exist in their imagination.
What does this look like in practice?
At Birchwood we are conscious that vision is just the start of the journey. We work with experts across the county and beyond to ensure that our reading curriculum is unshakable in its ability to provide our students with all that they need to become a reader. In the documents below, you will see our offer. Should you have any questions at all, our English Lead, Miss Burgess, is always available to talk all things reading, so please don't ever hesitate to call the school to book an appointment with her.
